Scandinavian Birch Bark Pack Basket

In this class, the students will learn a diagonal birch bark weaving technique that has evolved from northern Europe/Scandinavian traditions. In Scandinavia, the pliable birch bark has been used to make baskets, shoes, roofs, bags since prehistoric times. 

Students will learn how to prepare and split the birch bark prior to weaving and will construct a 3 1/2" x 9 " x 12" tall pack/shoulder basket.

About the Instructor: Mark Olson was born and raised 'ranger' from Chisholm, MN who loves knocking around in the woods, fishing, hunting, berry picking, shrooming, camping, observing, etc. Mark has created a life around learning and making traditional crafts which include, traditional skin tanning, basketry, pottery, knife making, wood-working, carving, friction fire starting, shoe making, and a career in timber framing. He loves crafting and sharing with others the joy that comes with keeping our hands and mind busy by making 'stuff '.
