Come learn to carve your own relief print!
Relief printing is a method of printmaking where a design is produced by cutting away the negative space of the design. The raised surface that remains uncarved is known as the relief and is the positive image. The relief is then inked and pressed onto the print material to create the printed image. In other words, it’s carving your own stamp!
We’ll start by going over the basic principles and then you’ll have time to practice and come up with your own design (or choose from some provided examples). From there we’ll move onto how to transfer your design, carving your design, and then inking! Ideally, you’ll be walking out of class with a stamp (or two!), some printed versions, and ideas of how to continue creating at home.
All materials and tools provided! However, if you’d like, bring a t-shirt or some other item of clothing (or scrap piece of fabric) if you’d like to practice printing onto fabric! Fabric ink will be provided.
Please wear dark clothing and/or clothing you don’t mind potentially getting ink on, snacks if you’d like, and anything else to make yourself comfortable!
No previous experience necessary and all skill levels welcome!
*All ages welcome, however we will be using somewhat sharp tools to carve, so children should have some adult supervision.
About your instructor: Rachael Pace is a mostly self-taught artist who lives here in Ely. She was born and raised in the desert and never imagined herself to be almost a decade into living in the Northwoods of Minnesota. After years of leading wilderness expeditions, she is now settling into a more “routine” lifestyle and excitedly diving back into making more art and exploring various art mediums. She is often most inspired by the nature around her and is interested in finding more sustainable ways to create and share art, printing on recycled fabrics being one of her current faves.
