Baking with Chef Boy-Aren't-You-Hungry!

Nothing is quite as satisfying as eating a great tasting meal made on the campfire of a Boundary Waters canoe trip. Don't get into the trap of bringing pre-packaged meals - backcountry baking doesn't have to be complicated!

In this class you will learn about different types of bread and baked goods you can make with basic bulk ingredients you travel with when camping. Bread, pizza, doughnuts, and cinnamon rolls are a few recipes we will go over. We'll talk about quick breads vs. yeast breads and different types of cooking camp gear to bring. After an introduction to backcountry baking, we will proceed to making cinnamon rolls!

Students will receive recipes and expert tips necessary to create and consume their own homemade backcountry meals. Students need only bring a notebook for ideas, recipes, and tips learned during class.

About the Instructor: Alexia Springer says, "I've been on all sides of wilderness trips- a student, an instructor, a program coordinator, and on my own personal expeditions. I often tire of the same old mac and cheese or dehydrated food that is often easily prepared and rapidly consumed. Making fresh baked products is an amazing tool for boosting group morale!"
